About the speaker
When Dr. Rapp finished his education as a chemical engineer he started to study chemistry at the University of Tuebingen. In 1985 he received his PhD in chemistry from the University of Tuebingen followed by a post doctoral period at the University. In 1988 he left the University and founded Rapp Polymere where he is CEO and responsible for R&D. In 1985 he received the “Award for Young Peptide Scientists” and in 1991 the “Innovation Award” from the Government of Baden- Wuerttemberg.
Abstract
During the last few years microwave assisted peptide synthesis has became popular and it was reported to be useful in some cases. There is also an ongoing discussion about an additional “microwave induced effect”. Based on this background we have synthesized several model peptides on a microwave synthesizer and compared with the synthesis on conventional batch and continuous flow synthesizers with and without microwave irradiation. During this investigation we have also compared reaction rates and purity of the peptides synthesized under the influence of microwave irradiation or conventional heating using different synthesizer systems and conditions. In no case we can find any additional postulated “microwave effect”. The results of this investigation will be presented and discussed.
